The concept of muscle strength

Muscular strength

Muscle strength is one of the essential elements in fitness associated with athletic performance, namely: the ability of the muscle to excite the largest possible number of fibers in the muscle in order to overcome multiple external resistances, as defined by Nolan Thaxton as: the ability of the muscle or muscle group to produce the maximum possible strength Against a specific resistance, it can also be defined as: (the maximum effort that can be produced in order to make a muscle contraction).

The concept of muscle strength

Based on the previous definitions, we can define the concept of muscle strength as follows:

  • It is the product that results from the maximum muscle contraction, whether fixed or moving.
  • Contraction is characterized by a maximum degree, and occurs once.
  • Contraction is voluntary, and it is controlled by the voluntary nervous system.
  • Muscle strength is related to the resistance to what it is facing, whether it is external weight, the weight of the body itself, or resistance to friction.

Types of muscle strength

Maximum strength: Means the ability of the muscular nervous system to produce the maximum voluntary constriction.
Rapid strength: It is the ability of the muscular nervous system to produce rapid strength. This strength is related to activities that require strong and rapid movements at the same time, such as: fast running.
Tolerance to strength: is the ability of the nervous system to resist a certain time as long as possible to face fatigue, and examples include: rowing and swimming.

The importance of muscular strength

The importance of the muscular strength of athletes lies in its association with some elements composed of physical fitness, such as: the ability or energy required by the nature of sports performance; As these sporting activities require the production of rapid strength, as it is related to speed, especially the transition speed in the activities of swimming and running, as increasing the force of the foot push towards the ground increases the length of the running step, and the tensile strength in swimming increases the body’s impulsion forward, leading each Increase momentum or tension to speed the distance in the shortest time possible.

Muscular strength is also associated with the element of endurance, especially in physical activities that require continuing to perform a strong muscle action such as: boxing and wrestling, and also linked to the general health of the person, as it develops muscle tone in the body, the strength of the back muscles prevents exposure to herniated disc, and the strength of the abdominal muscles increases resistance to visceral pressure The interior, which reduces the appearance of rumen, in addition to giving the body a good appearance.

Factors affecting muscle strength

  • Muscle length.
  • Age; The lower the age, the more muscle strength.
  • Sex, where the muscles of men are stronger than the muscles of women.
  • Muscle size.
  • Training period.
  • Body style, i.e. skinny, fat, or muscular.
